Cyberduck is a user-friendly FTP, SFTP, and cloud storage browser available for macOS and Windows. On macOS, Cyberduck by default can use the system proxy. Open Cyberduck and go to Preferences (Cyberduck > Preferences in the menu bar). Click on the Connection tab. Ensure that “Use system proxy settings” is checked. This tells Cyberduck to honor whatever proxy is configured in your Mac’s Network settings. (On Windows, Cyberduck also uses system settings by default; there isn’t a separate proxy UI in newer versions, so the steps will rely on Windows’ settings directly.)
Since Cyberduck is set to use system settings, the next step is to configure your system proxy to point to Anyone.io.
On macOS: Open System Preferences > Network. Select your active connection and click Advanced..., then go to the Proxies tab. Enable SOCKS Proxy and enter 127.0.0.1 with port 9050 (assuming the Anyone.io client is running locally) or the appropriate LAN IP of your Anyone.io device with port 9050. Click OK and Apply to save.
On Windows: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Under Manual proxy setup, toggle it on. Windows’ interface mainly allows an HTTP proxy directly; for a SOCKS proxy, you might need to use the Internet Options: open Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Advanced. In the proxy settings dialog, find the Socks field and input 127.0.0.1 as the address and 9050 as the port. OK and Apply the changes.
After applying system proxy settings, you may need to restart Cyberduck for it to pick up the new settings (especially on Windows). On Mac, once the system proxy is set, Cyberduck will use it immediately for new connections.
Now, open a connection in Cyberduck as you normally would (FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, etc.). Cyberduck will route this connection through the Anyone.io SOCKS5 proxy you configured. You don’t have to change anything in how you use Cyberduck – just connect to servers or cloud storage and the proxying happens in the background.
Using a proxy with Cyberduck via Anyone.io provides an extra layer of security and freedom. All file transfers and browsing you do in Cyberduck are now channeled through the Anyone.io network. This hides your true IP address from the servers or cloud services you access. For example, if you’re connecting to a WebDAV server or Amazon S3 via Cyberduck, those services will see a request coming from the proxy network, not your computer, adding anonymity. It’s particularly beneficial if you’re on a restrictive network – the proxy can help get around firewall rules that might block certain protocols because the traffic is being diverted through a common port (9050) and encrypted. Mac users benefit from a seamless integration since Cyberduck can automatically use the Mac’s network proxy settings. Windows users can achieve the same by adjusting the system settings.
