Apple’s Safari browser can take advantage of the Anyone.io network as a free proxy, allowing you to browse privately and securely on your Mac. Even though Safari itself doesn’t have in-app proxy settings, it uses your Mac’s system network settings – so by configuring a SOCKS5 proxy at the system level, Safari will send all its traffic through the Anyone.io network. The benefit is that you get the privacy of onion-like routing (multiple encrypted hops) for all your web activities on Safari. It’s an effective way to avoid tracking, get around content blocks, and keep your browsing encrypted, all without paying for a VPN.
Click the Apple menu and go to System Preferences (or System Settings on macOS Ventura and above), then select Network.
Choose your active internet connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) from the list on the left, then click the Advanced… button. In the advanced settings, navigate to the Proxies tab.
In the Proxies tab, you’ll see a list of protocols. Check the box for SOCKS Proxy. Then in the SOCKS Proxy Server fields, input the Anyone.io proxy details. For the Address, enter the proxy host (for example, 127.0.0.1 if the Anyone.io client or relay is running on your Mac/network). For the Port, enter 9050. (Leave Username/Password blank unless your proxy specifically requires it – the Anyone.io free proxy typically does not use login authentication.)
Click OK to close the advanced panel, then click Apply in the Network settings to save the changes. Now launch Safari and start browsing as usual. Safari will automatically use the SOCKS5 proxy we configured, meaning all your web requests are now going through the privacy-protecting Anyone.io network.
With Safari traffic flowing through Anyone.io’s free proxy, you gain significant privacy benefits on your Mac. Your browsing data is encrypted and relayed through the distributed Anyone.io network, so websites and other prying parties can’t easily identify you or your location. This is very useful on public Wi-Fi or restrictive networks – you can avoid surveillance and unblock sites since your requests appear to come from the Anyone.io network. Safari’s performance remains high, and you don’t need any extra software running aside from the lightweight Anyone.io client or device. Essentially, you’re turning Safari into a secure, anonymous browser without changing your normal workflow. It’s an excellent, cost-free way to boost Safari’s privacy features using community-powered technology.
